Augmenting Human Intellect
Augmenting Human Intellect is a conceptual framework proposed by Douglas Engelbart in his 1962 paper, *"Augmenting Human Intellect: A Conceptual Framework."* It posits that human intelligence can be amplified through a synergistic system of tools, languages, and methods.
The H-LAM/T System
Engelbart defined the augmentation of an individual as the improvement of their H-LAM/T system:
- Human (H): The individual with their basic biological capabilities.
- Language (L): The way the individual parcels the world into concepts and symbols used for thinking.
- Artifacts (A): Physical objects (like computers) used to manipulate symbols or concepts.
- Methodology (M): The procedures and strategies used for goal-centered activity.
- Training (T): The conditioning and learning required to effectively use the Language, Artifacts, and Methodology.
Bootstrapping
A core strategy in Engelbart's framework is Bootstrapping: the process of using one's current intellectual effectiveness to design and implement even more powerful tools and methods, creating a self-accelerating cycle of improvement.
Impact on PKM
Engelbart’s vision shifted the focus of technology from mere calculation to Symbolic Manipulation. In a modern llm-wiki-pattern, the LLM serves as a powerful Artifact that automates the Methodology of organizing and linking knowledge, thereby augmenting the Human's ability to synthesize complex ideas.
